There's a lot of talk about SCR, but here are the facts, straight up.

SCR is cleaner than EGR. A lot cleaner, at 0.17 g/bhp-hr NOx, compared to
EGR's 0.47 g/bhp-hr NOx. So it's no surprise that SCR is the better technology proven to meet and beat EPA 2010 NOx requirements of 0.2 g/bhp-hr.

Tests by Thomas' engine partner, Cummins, show that SCR-equipped vehicles get a 5-9 percent better fuel economy advantage over EGR-only vehicles. That can translate to about $270 in savings per bus per year.

Engines equipped with SCR emissions technology are reliable and durable, with a
20-25 percent longer life expectancy than those with EGR-only technology.

SCR is an aftertreatment system which means the 2010 engine remains largely the same as the EPA 2007 engine you know. So you won't have to learn how to maintain a new, complex engine design.

Diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) is an integral part of the SCR aftertreatment system. DEF tanks can be refilled during regular maintenance, just like the other fluids in your buses.
